George W. Peck
George W. Peck was a personification of the American dream. This Wisconsin native enlisted as a private in the Union Army during the Civil War,
and was an officer by war's end. Afterward, he worked as a writer and editor for fellow Wisconsinian,
"Brick" Pomeroy in New York, then took over Pomeroy's old newspaper in his home state, renaming it "Peck's Sun."
During the early 1870s, Peck toured lecture halls with his popular comedy routine, "How Peck and Another Mule Crushed the Rebellion."
He filled his newspaper with original humor, and eventually created his most famous and beloved character, Peck's Bad Boy.
Later, Peck became Mayor of Milwaukie, and followed that up by becoming a popular two-term Democratic Governor of Wisconsin,
at the time a staunch Republican bastion. Essentially, Peck was the first comedian to achieve high political office in the United States, but apparently not the last.
