George Horatio Derby

George Horatio Derby was an accomplished Army Engineer who served in San Diego in the 1850s.
To make extra money, he wrote humorous stories for local newspapers, under assorted pen names such as John Phoenix and Squibob.
He died very young, but while he was alive, an unscrupulous publisher put out assorted editions
of his stories that sold well for many years. Neither Derby nor his widow received royalties from the books.
Nevertheless, his unique brand of oblique humor tickled the nation's funnybone
for many decades, well into the twentieth century, and his work was highly influential to many humorists.
