Brick Pomeroy



Marcus Mills ("Brick") Pomeroy was a highly complex and controversial figure,
who published a daring copperhead newspaper in Wisconsin during the Civil War, and was almost lynched after Lincoln's assasination.
He went on to publish an extremely popular newspaper out of New York City called Brick Pomeroy's Democrat.
He associated himself with some of the most virulently racist groups in the nation, yet worked with the Freedmen's Bureau,
and closely collaborated with Mary E. Tucker, one of the first popular black woman writers in the country,
to produce his autobiography in 1868. He was maligned and attacked in the press
for decades after his death, yet this gentle, teatotaler man worked tirelessly for the cause of social justice.
Above all, he was a terrific humorist, who wrote wildly popular funny books. Here are the Pomeroy stories we have done so far:
