Derek Evry's song "Falling" has become a viral hit over the internet, with thousands of people sending each other audio grabs of the Lo-Fi version of the song from Derek's My Space page. This energetic, upbeat tune is getting a reputation as a feel-good song, and is heading for the charts when it is officially released as part of Derek's digital album, "Don't Think . . . " on iTunes and CD Baby.

But great songs are only part of the picture. The story behind it involves the infamous East Coast Blizzard of 2010, and a willingness to try something different. With the boredom that comes from cabin fever, twenty-four year old Derek Evry began a flurry of inspired songwriting. Derek was trapped in his Arlington, Virginia apartment for a week, bored with watching television. He was used to going out at night and performing at local nightspots.

For years, Derek had been the front man for several bands. He recently has been finishing up a studio album produced by Grammy-nominated engineer John "Gotti" Phipps (Emily King, Chuck Brown, Raheem DeVaughn, Ledsi). This album will be mastered and replicated on disk in October, 2010.

Meanwhile, Derek has been pleasing his small, but dedicated fan base with solo appearances at bars and restaurants in the DC area. He is a very popular act at Arlington's IOTA club and Whitlows on Wilson.

Using the Garage Band computer program, Derek recorded a fourteen-song album entirely by himself, doing all the voice work, sequencing the drums and playing every instrument. Once the tracks were laid down, he spent another week mixing and remixing, and finally getting help from his friend Mike Provenzano in mastering it. This DIY concept was all new territory for Derek, having been the principal songwriter for two bands, and usually utilizing professional recording studios. By departing from the standard "this is how you make a record" mentality, he has created an inspired, energetic, and compelling musical work.

Kyle Osborne, Emmy Award-winning host of DC's News Channel 8's 'Entertainment Forecast' program, had this to say about Derek:

"Derek is the first guy since, maybe Matthew Sweet, to fuse melody and "edge", without compromising either. His songs are instantly singable, yet utterly original...not many artists are both commercial and credible, Derek is one of the few."

Carl Raether, bassist for LA-based band Superficial Saints, provided the photograph and cover design for the album, "Don't Think . . ." which is now available to the public only as a digital download through CD Baby Digital Downloads ( http://cdbaby.com/derekevry), and the iTunes Store.

On Wednesday, April 21st, Derek will be the featured artist at Whitlows on Wilson in Arlington, Virginia (2854 Wilson Blvd., Arlington, VA 22201), where he will be performing "Don't Think . . ." from front to back, followed by a set of new originals. Derek is also scheduling a line-up of club dates in the area, and will soon have a new band to back him up for some of these shows. On Wednesday, May 5th, Derek will be the featured artist at IOTA Club & Cafe's open mic night, and will be selling limited edition download cards for "Don't Think . . .".

You can hear three of the fourteen tracks from "Don't Think . . ." in streaming low fidelity at http://myspace.com/derekevry and full downloads of the entire uncompressed album are available to members of the press by contacting Derek at derekevry@gmail.com.
